RICHMOND, Va. - Appalachian State field hockey dropped its season-opener, 4-1, to VCU on Sunday morning.
VCU's Kendell Combs netted the first score of the game, just under 3:30 in to the first-half. Combs struck again three minutes later off a corner, and assisted by Melanie Marotta and Stephanie DeMasi to give the Rams a 2-0 lead. The Mountaineers cut their deficit with a goal from freshman Jessi Stuart, assisted by freshman Dana Wetmore. The Rams increased their lead back to two scores, 3-1, with a goal off a rebound from Arialle Hess to end the first-half.
Ram's Kelsey Scherrer scored the lone goal of the second-half with just under 14 minutes into the half.
ASU falls to 0-1, while VCU improves to 1-1.
The Apps return to action next weekend when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to face off with James Madison on September 3 and Rider on Sept. 4.
