Men's Basketball Survives Late Tulsa Rally

Nov. 12, 2010

TULSA, Okla. - Behind 35 points from junior Omar Carter, Appalachian State University men's basketball staved off a late Tulsa rally to earn an 89-86 win in the season opener in front of 5,418 fans at the Reynolds Center.

Making his Mountaineer debut, the junior transfer from Charleston Southern sank 10-of-18 field goals, including five three-pointers and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line against the Conference USA opponent.

After Appalachian (1-0) turned a 55-52 deficit into a 70-60 lead midway through the second half, solid free-throw shooting and defense allowed ASU to maintain a comfortable cushion into the final minute and give Jason Capel his first victory as a head coach..

Trailing 76-67 with just over one minute remaining, the Golden Hurricane (0-1) began fouling the visitors and Carter, Marcus Wright and Donald Sims combined to sink 12 of the squad's final 13 free throws.

TU did not perish without a fight, scoring a whopping 16 points in the game's final 49 seconds to keep the outcome in doubt until the final horn.  After a Scottie Haralson trey cut the game to three points with 2.8 seconds left, TU stole a long inbound pass and Kodi Maduka was fouled with 1.4 seconds left before getting an opportunity to launch a potential game-tying buzzer beater.

For the game, the Apps shot 53 percent from the floor, including a 12-of-19 mark in the second half, good for 63 percent. The squad added 8-of-17 from downtown for 47 percent. Tulsa made 46 percent of its shots and drained 8-of-22 from three-point range.

Sims, the defending Southern Conference Player of the Year and only senior in the starting lineup, added 18 points on 4-of-8 shooting with an 8-of-8 mark at the charity stripe. The guard added seven assists and four rebounds to accompany one of ASU's five steals.

Starting big men Andre Williamson and newcomer Petey Hausley scored 10 points each on a combined 7-of-11 shooting. Hausley tallied seven rebounds and a block while Williamson added four boards and swatted two shots.

Mitch Woods also started for Appalachian in his debut and added six rebounds, five points and four of ASU's 13 assists.

Also making his Black and Gold debut, Anthony Thomas came off the bench to sink his only field goal attempt in three minutes of action.

TU's Haralson was the home team's leading scorer with 26 points, while big man Steven Idlet added 20 of his own.

The squads tied with 33 rebounds apiece while Tulsa won the turnover battle by a margin of 19-15.
