CHARLESTON, S.C. —
Jack Myers broke out of a 2-for-38 slump and atoned for an earlier defensive miscue with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning that drove in the winning run in Appalachian State University baseball's 6-4 Southern Conference Tournament win over UNC Greensboro on Thursday morning at Riley Park.
With the victory, No. 6 seed Appalachian (32-26) advances to play the winner of Thursday's Samford-Furman winners' bracket contest on Friday at 3 p.m. No. 2 UNC Greensboro (34-20) became the first team eliminated from the SoCon Tournament field.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, ASU put runners on second and third with one out when
Jeremy Dowdy led off the stanza with a sharp single to left field and
Tyler Zupcic roped a double to right center.
Trey Holmes tied the game at 4-4 with a sacrifice fly to center and Myers followed with a looping single to center that brought Zupcic home with the go-ahead run.
Myers' big hit made up for his defensive blunder in the top half of the inning. With two outs, runners on first and second and the score knotted at 3-3, ASU reliever
Will Helms got UNCG RBI leader Trevor Edwards to lift a catchable fly ball into right field. However, Myers misplayed the ball in the wind and sun and fell to the ground as Trevor Edwards' ground-rule double bounced over the right-field wall and Kris Richards scored to give Greensboro its only lead of the game.
Myers, a senior co-captain and second-team all-SoCon honoree who ranked among the conference's batting leaders for much of the season, provided Appalachian with its biggest moment of the season to date by registering only his third hit since May 9. He was just 1-for-8 in the SoCon Tournament prior to the clutch hit.
After Myers gave the Mountaineers the lead in the seventh, they added an insurance run when UNCG pitchers threw 16-straight balls to walk in a run in the bottom of the eighth.
That would be more than enough for ASU closer
Taylor Miller, who retired six of the seven batters he faced to close out the win with a two-inning save, his 12th of the season. Helms retired the only batter he faced in the seventh to earn the win and move to 4-0 on the season and 11-0 in his career. The junior southpaw is the only active NCAA Division I player with double-digit victories and no losses in his career.
All nine starters contributed to Appalachian's 11-hit effort with Zupcic and Holmes collecting two apiece.
Bobby Martin went 3-for-5 with an RBI to lead UNCG. Spartan starter Colby Hyatt was charged with five of ASU's six runs (three earned) to suffer the loss and fall to 8-3 on the campaign.
