Arrowood Named SoCon Pitcher of the Week Again
SPARNANBURG, S.C. — For the second time in three weeks, Appalachian State University baseball's Ryan Arrowood has been named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Arrowood's latest honor comes in recognition of his first career shutout in Friday's 4-0 win over Samford.

Arrowood allowed only four hits and walked just one batter while striking out eight for ASU's first complete-game shutout since May 9, 2008, when former teammate Matt Andress blanked Furman, 5-0. The right-handed junior needed just 102 pitches to go the distance for the first time in his career.

In what ASU head coach Chris Pollard described as one of the best-pitched games he's seen in his 20 years in college baseball, Arrowood was in control throughout. He did not surrender a base hit to 14-straight batters at one point early in the ballgame and retired the final eight hitters he faced to complete the gem.

With the shutout, Arrowood extended his string of consecutive scoreless innings to 20, stretching over three starts. He upped his record to 5-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.16, good for fourth in the SoCon.

With Arrowood's latest recognition, Appalachian has claimed three-straight SoCon Pitcher-of-the-Week awards, with Arrowood also earning the honor for his work in a 3-1 win over Wofford on April 1 and Nathan Hyatt receiving the recognition last week for his performance in a 10-2 victory over Furman on April 9. It marks only the seventh time since the SoCon began doling out weekly awards in 1989 that one team has boasted three-consecutive Pitchers of the Week. Western Carolina was the last club to accomplish the feat, doing so from April 23-May 7, 2007.

Appalachian closes a five-game homestand on Tuesday night versus Presbyterian at 6 p.m. Arrowood will take the mound on Thursday when the Mountaineers open a three-game SoCon series at Davidson at 7 p.m.
