HIGH POINT, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's track and field continued to have stellar outdoor showings Sunday afternoon, as the Mountaineers tallied numerous impressive performances at the High Point Invitational. The meet serves as a final tune up for ASU, and is the Black and Gold's last before the rapidly approaching 2011 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships.
Five Mountaineers competed in the hammer throw, with sophomore
Gayshawna Watkins leading the way for the group. Watkins came in fourth with a throw of 148-5, while
Norjai Palma finished right behind her teammate, coming in fifth with a toss of 142-1.
Jocelyn Parnell,
Michaela McGriff and
Ana DeLeon took home the ninth, 11th and 12th place spots with marks of 120-9, 119-3 and 118-5.
Watkins was also strong in the shot put, placing first, with a throw of 45-9.75.
Palma notched the runner-up spot with a throw of 43-5, while Parnell recorded a new-personal best in the event with a toss of 39-5.75. DeLeon wrapped up the event coming in sixth with a throw of 37-0.25.
In the 400m hurdles,
Shenita Martin paced Appalachian, earning a third place finish with a throw of 64.03. The time is a new season-best mark for Martin.
Helena Shields was also solid in the 400m hurdles, finishing fifth with a time of 64.65. The mark is a new personal-best for Shields and keeps her at eighth on Appalachian's all-time list in the event.
Naadia Crutchfield,
Joanna Davis and
Molly Vaughn came in sixth, eighth and 13th overall in the race with times of 66.81, 68.94 and 73.65.
Kristen Campbell grabbed the runner-up spot in the 100m dash with a new personal best time of 12.25, while Christina Parke came in fourth with a season-best time of 12.68.
Continuing to show their strength in the sprinting events,
Breahna Morrison ran to a new personal best in the 400m dash with a mark of 57.50, and
Lynda Hiller finished fourth with a new season-best time of 58.82.
In perhaps one of the most notable performances of the day, senior
Rebecca Hazeltine tied the school record in the high jump, leaping a new personal best of 5-10 to take home first in the event.
Shaquiela Robinson placed third in the high jump with a new personal best jump of 5-6, and
Mary Theresa Montgomery came in sixth with a leap of 5-0.25. Robinson's jump of 5-6 ties her for seventh on Appalachian's all-time list in the event.
Four Apps ran in the 1500m run, as
Justine Stocks took third with a time of 4:44.35.
Kayla Schneider was right behind Stocks with a mark of 4:46.16 and
Anna Gannett finished ninth with a time of 4:51.68. All three set new personal best marks in the event.
Allison Cook wrapped up the 1500m run with a 12th place finish, finishing with a time of 4:55.99.
Vaughn raced to a second place finish in the 100m hurdles with a new personal best time of 15.39. Running in the event for the first time this season, Robinson took home third with a time of 15.44.
Michelle Brutus, Davis and
Andrea Jones placed fourth, fifth and 12th in the 100m hurdles with times of 15.67, 15.68 and 16.75.
In the 800m run
Destine Kirkman came in fourth with a time of 2:22.90.
Campbell had a notable performance in the 200m dash as well, coming in first in the event with new personal best time of 25.01. Morrison, Parker and Hiller came in fourth, fifth and ninth with times of 25.67, 25.73 and 26.86 respectively.
DeAnne Tiplady grabbed the runner-up spot in the javelin with a throw of 123-2, and Watkins and Parnell came in seventh and eighth with throws of 112-2 and 107-9.
In the long jump
Andrea Jones jumped to an eighth place finish with a mark of 16-10.75.
Cassie Crawford was once again solid in the pole vault, tying for second in the event with a vault of 12-2, while
Meredith Wilson came in tenth in the event with a vault of 10-0.5.
Three Mountaineers ran in the final track event of the day, the 5,000m run with
Lori Crotts placing a team-best fifth with a time of 19:27.01.
Natalie Shaw and Jenna Williamson took the sixth and seventh place finishes with marks of 19:41.71 and 19:58.01.
Wrapping up competition, Palma paced three Apps in the discus throw, as she came in third with a throw of 135-4.
Ana DeLeon was not too far behind Palma finishing fourth with a new personal-best throw of 135-2. DeLeon's toss is good enough to bump her into 10th on ASU's all-time list in the event. McGriff finished seventh, also setting a new pr with a throw of 119-3.
Appalachian now sets its sights on the upcoming 2011 SoCon Outdoor Championships. Seeking their first outdoor team title since 2009. The 2011 SoCon Outdoor Championships are set to take place Friday, April 22 and will conclude Saturday, April 23 on Samford's campus at Seibert Stadium.
