SPARTANBURG, S.C. — For the second-straight week, Appalachian State University is home to the Southern Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week, as the SoCon office announced Monday that
Nathan Hyatt has earned the honor on the strength of his performance in Saturday's 10-2 win over Furman.
Hyatt did not allow an earned run over a career-best eight innings pitched in Saturday's triumph. He limited Furman to four hits and two unearned runs while striking out six to even his record at 4-4 on the season.
Perhaps most impressively, the right-handed sophomore got stronger as the game went on in 84-degree heat. He retired 13 of the final 14 hitters of his 115-pitch outing and faced the minimum 12 batters over his final four innings of work.
Hyatt is Appalachian's second-straight SoCon Pitcher of the Week, joining
Ryan Arrowood, who received the recognition after striking out 10 over eight innings of a 3-1 win over Wofford on April 1. Three Mountaineer hurlers have been honored this season, including
Lawrence Pardo, who did not surrender an earned run in a 7-5 victory at No. 20 Miami (Fla.) on Feb. 25.
Pardo will take the mound on Tuesday when ASU closes a five-game road trip at traditional college-baseball power Tennessee. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. On Wednesday, the Mountaineers open a five-game homestand when they host Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m. at Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.
