NCAA Announces Wrestling Tournament Field

BOONE, N.C.- The NCAA announced the tournament field to the upcoming NCAA Championship being held March 17-19 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa. The 330 wrestlers and full brackets for all 10 weight classes (33 in each) were unveiled Wednesday night on the NCAA's official web site.

While Appalachian State University wrestling did not receive any at-large bids to the tournament, two Mountaineers already had their spots secured due to the winning of the conference title.

Junior Kyle Blevins rolled through the 165 bracket and eventually beat the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year Turtogtokh Luvsandorj en route to his first SoCon title and giving him his first trip to the prestigious event. The SoCon Tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler currently holds a 10-7 record against opponents that made the field that he has faced this season. Blevins faces Justin Lister from Binghamton out of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Lister is 22-6 on the season and is no stranger to the big stage. The two-time CAA champion is 4-2 in the NCAA tournament, winning fourth place last season to garner all-America status. The winner of the match draws the winner of #1-seeded Jordan Burroughs (Nebraska, 31-0) and Ethan Headlee (Pittsburgh, 26-10).

Redshirt junior Austin Trotman became the 16th wrestler in ASU history to retain a conference crown when he won his second SoCon title at 184. This will be the third trip to NCAAs for Trotman as he earned an at-large bid in 2008 and earned a berth via his title last season. Trotman holds a 5-1 record against opponents that made the field that he has wrestled this season. Trotman begins his quest for all-America status after he gets the winner of the match between Corey Peltier (21-8) from Maryland and #12-seeded Grant Gambrall (19-7) from Iowa.

"I am excited for Blevins and Trotman," said ASU head coach JohnMark Bentley. "I think they both have a great shot of making all-American. I am disappointed we didn't get any at-large bids because I felt Kessler (Mike) and Kostis (Savva) were right on the bubble."

"We are just preparing Trotman and Blevins to wrestler one match at a time," added Bentley. "If they stay focused on the task in front of them, it should be an outstanding NCAA Tournament for ASU."

In addition to its 10 conference champions, the SoCon received one more additional bid at 165, 184 and 285. Those bids were given to Luvsandorj (38-8) at 165, Chattanooga's Jason McCroskey (23-9) at 184 and UNC Greensboro's Peter Sturgeon (31-11) at 285. UTC's Niko Brown (20-9), who finished runner-up in the conference tournament, received the SoCon's only at-large bid at 197.

Wrestling from the annual gathering of the nation's top wrestlers is set to begin at 11 a.m.
