SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Donald Sims added yet another award to his collection as the Southern Conference Sports Media Association voted the senior men's basketball player first team all-conference for a second-straight season. Junior Omar Carter earned second team honors from the league's media.
Sims is joined by four South division players on the first team, including College of Charleston's Malcolm U Pitt Player of the Year Andrew Goudelock, The Citadel's Cameron Wells, Furman's Amu Saaka and Wofford's Noah Dahlman. Appalachian (15-14, 10-8 SoCon) is the only program represented on each of the top two teams.
Along with Carter, four other North division players earned second team honors, led by Chattanooga's Keegan Bell and Omar Wattad, as well as Elon's Chris Long and Western Carolina's Mike Williams.
Wofford and College of Charleston each placed two more players on the third team, along with Georgia Southern's Ben Drayton III.
The league's media mirrored the coaches' voting for individual awards, as CofC's Bobby Cremins earned Coach of the Year honors and Western Carolina's Trey Sumler was named Freshman of the Year.
Both Sims and Carter rank in the league's top-five in scoring and led the Apps to a 9-3 home record and 7-1 mark in February, as the Mountaineers enter this weekend's Southern Conference Tournament as one of the league's hottest teams.
The pair was honored on Tuesday by the league, as they were selected to the 10-member coaches' all-Southern Conference team. Carter and Sims each won two Player of the Week awards during the season and Sims added November's Player of the Month award as well.
Sims becomes just the seventh Mountaineer to earn multiple first team all-Southern Conference honors. He follows Sam Gibson (1989, '90), Steve Spurlock (1991, '92), Chad McClendon (1994, '95), Kareem Livingston (1996, '98), Marshall Phillips (1998, '99) and D.J. Thompson (2006, '07)
Appalachian faces Georgia Southern in Friday's opening round. The tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. at Chattanooga's McKenzie Arena.
