BOONE, N.C. - Donald Sims scored 32 points and Appalachian State University men's basketball shot 63 percent after halftime to pull away from Southern Conference regular season champion College of Charleston, 85-70, on Thursday night at the Holmes Center. It was ASU's 100th win in the building, which opened in 2000.

Sims' third 30-point outing of the season came on 11-of-16 shooting with 6-of-9 three-pointers and four free throws. He added six of the Mountaineers' (14-14, 9-8 SoCon) 10 assists to accompany five rebounds and a steal.

After shooting 38.2 percent in the opening period, the Apps connected on 19-of-30 attempts from the field after the intermission to finish at 50 percent for the night.

Senior Jeremi Booth also shot well, connecting on 5-of-9 attempts for 14 points. The guard added three treys, four rebounds and a pair of steals in 37 minutes.

The Cougars (22-8, 14-3) hung with the Apps in the first period and led by as many as three points with six minutes to play, thanks in part to 50 percent shooting and 15 points from Andrew Goudelock. The league's leading scorer finished the night with 23 points on 9-of-20 shooting, including four three-pointers. He tied for the team lead with five assists as well.

Coming out of halftime, the squads battled back and forth with five more ties in the first eight minutes before the Mountaineers set out on a swift 10-point run to claim the lead for good. Four different players connected on field goals during the two-minute burst, beginning with a Nathan Healy layup and Petey Hausley steal and fast-break dunk. Sims and Booth punctuated the run with a pair of three-pointers on the following possessions.

With a 64-54 lead and 10 minutes to play, Appalachian fought off CofC's attempts to rally and never let the Cougars back any closer than seven points down the stretch.

Omar Carter chipped in 13 points, including nine in the first half. The junior added six rebounds and a steal. Healy finished with seven points, four rebounds, two assists and a block in 17 minutes, while Hausley added six points and two rebounds in 15 minutes of action.

Appalachian owned a 38-29 advantage on the glass, led by seven boards from Andre Williamson. The forward shot 4-for-10 from the field for nine points and swatted two blocks in the contest.

Trent Wiedeman led three other Cougars in double figure scoring with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Donavan Monroe and Willis Hall added 10 points each.

ASU closes out the regular season on Saturday against The Citadel. Prior to the 2 p.m. tipoff, the Mountaineers will honor seniors Booth, Sims and J.R. Archer. It is a double-header with ASU's women's basketball squad, which takes on UNC Greensboro at 5 p.m.

NOTES: Mitch Woods was sidelined with a hip injury ... Booth injured his left hand late in the game ... Both players are questionable for Saturday's game ... CofC's loss snapped a seven-game winning streak and was the largest margin of defeat for the Cougars in league play this season ... ASU's win gives the program a 100-47 (.680) record in the Holmes Center and 56-37 (.602) mark in home SoCon games in the building ... The Mountaineers have won six of their seven games in February ... ASU is 5-1 in its last six regular season home finales.
