BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's basketball fell short to Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern Monday evening, as the Apps suffered a 67-57 setback to the Eagles. The loss snaps an 18 game home winning streak and 12 game season winning streak for the Mountaineers. With the defeat ASU also now drops to 22-5 on the season and 16-3 in league action (two conference losses coming to GSU), while the Eagles improve to 12-16 overall and 9-10 in SoCon play.
In a contest that saw six lead changes and the score knotted seven times, it was Georgia Southern who made the final push in the last ten minutes of the game to upset the Mountaineers.
Once play was tied at 45, the Eagles scored five straight points to jump on top 50-45 with less than 10 minutes left to play.
Despite the Apps trying to answer, ASU could never come closer than a one-point deficit and Georgia Southern outscored Appalachian 22-12 in the final ten minutes of play to deal the Black and Gold their first home loss of the season.
Struggling to get anything going offensively, ASU scored just five second-half field goals, shooting a dismal 20.0 percent from the floor.
Poor shooting proved to be detrimental to Appalachian, who leads the league in field goal percentage, as the Apps also went 0-11 from behind the arc.
The squad struggled from the charity stripe as well, shooting 67 percent from the free throw line, missing key free throws in the waning minutes of action.
The first period was heated, but after the opening four minutes were tied at five apiece, ASU was able to take a 20-15 lead at the halfway mark of the first.
It was sophomore Ashlen Dewart that found the bottom of the basket for the Apps, as she scored the first seven points of the game for Appalachian and finished the half with nine, despite only playing seven minutes due to foul trouble.
Dewart was impressive in the game as she posted her fifth double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 20 points, with 10 of them coming from the free throw line, while also tying a team-best with 10 rebounds.
Able to withstand an 8-2 Eagle surge, led by Samantha Williams who buried back-to-back treys, Appalachian rallied and closed out the half scoring four points in the final minute, with Kelsey Sharkey recording three of them, to take the narrow 33-30 edge into the break.
Williams was one of four Eagles to post double-digits in the scoring column, as she had 18 points, including three three-pointers.
Georgia Southern however came out strong in the second-half and ASU could never rebound after falling behind at the 11 minute mark, and the Eagles went on to sweep Appalachian for the second-straight season.
Looking to rebound, Appalachian closes out its 2010-11 regular season Saturday, February 26 as the Mountaineers host UNCG. The contest is slated to tip off at 5 p.m. from the Holmes Center and will serve as Senior Day for ASU's lone stellar senior Sam Ramirez.
Notes: The loss is just ASU's fifth of the season … the defeat is Appalachian's first since falling to Georgia Southern back on January 10 … the defeat is ASU's fourth-straight to Georgia Southern and marks the second straight season Appalachian was been swept by the Eagles … the loss snaps a 12-game winning streak for the Apps … the loss snaps an 18-game home winning streak for the Mountaineers and is ASU's first home loss since January 11, 2010 when losing to Samford … Georgia Southern is the only team to have beaten ASU in 2011 (twice).
