CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- Appalachian State University wrestling (7-10-1, 1-3 SoCon) had a setback at Virginia on Saturday afternoon after picking up its first Southern Conference dual victory against VMI on Friday night, losing by a score of 31-8.

The Mountaineers got down quick by a score of 12-0 after Virginia's Matt Snyder pinned sophomore Tony Gravely in 5:25 during the 125 bout and then Chris Johnson was pinned by Joe Spisak in 2:19 in the 133 match.

Junior Mike Kessler got ASU on the board after he tallied a 4-1 decision over Gus Sako in the 141-pound matchup.

UVA's Derek Valenti got the best of junior Savva Kostis during a very-tight 149 match as Valenti won the bout, 2-0, allowing the Cavaliers to go ahead 15-3 in team points.

The Cavaliers rolled through the next match as sophomore John Blakely fell to Shawn Harris, 6-2 at 157 to bring the team point total to 18-3.

No. 20 Kyle Blevins  squeezed by Jedd Moore in the 165 match, relaying on riding time to give him the 3-2 decision. The Mountaineers were deducted one team point for bench misconduct, moving the team score to 18-5.

No. 4 Chris Henrich proved to be too much for junior Carter Downs as UVA earned its third pin of the dual at 174, pinning Downs in 1:52 to give the Cavaliers a firm 24-5 lead over Appalachian.

Redshirt junior Austin Trotman  got the Mountaineers back on the board again as he earned an upset victory over No. 18 Jon Fausey, 13-6, in the 184 match, closing the gap slightly to 24-8.

ASU fell in the final two bouts at 197 and 285 to secure the win for the Cavaliers, 31-8.

Appalachian travels to Davidson on Feb. 20 for a 2 p.m. Sunday match before concluding the regular season at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty. ASU hosts to the 2011 SoCon Wrestling Championship on March 5.
