BOONE, N.C. - In the team's first duals of the season,
Appalachian State wrestling (2-0) had little trouble knocking off both of its
opponents. After downing Anderson (0-3) by a score of 32-12, the Apps swept
Belmont Abbey (0-3), 50-0 at Varsity Gym on Sunday.
Despite the positive results, coach JohnMark Bentley had
some frustration with the less-than-perfect day.
"I'm disappointed with the way our guys competed in the
first match," Bentley said. "We didn't control the action, and we had spent a
lot of time in practice working on scoring points. Our guys have to learn to be
ready for every bout and not let down."
"In the second match," Bentley continued. "We did much
better, and I'm proud of the way we handled our competition.
With Sunday's results in mind, Bentley will select his lineup to
travel to the Keystone Classic hosted by Pennsylvania on Sun., Nov. 20 in
Philadelphia, Pa.

BOUT-BY-BOUT
vs. Anderson
125: Parisi (ASU) pin Myers
Parisi jumped out to a quick lead in the first period,
notching a takedown and a pair of three-point near falls for the 8-0 advantage
at the first break. Starting from neutral, Parisi picked up three more take
downs before ending the bout with a pin at the expiration of the second period.
141: Kessler (ASU) pin Harper
Keesler needed just under two minutes to seal this bout. The
senior recorded a takedown and three-point near fall before picking up the pin
at the 1:55 mark in the first.
149: Kostis (ASU) MD Telhada
The first period was quiet with Kostis earning a takedown
for the stanza's only points. From the defensive position, Kostis picked up an
early second-period reversal, allowed Telhada to escape and earned another
takedown for a 6-1 lead into the final period. Telhada narrowed the gap with an
early escape, but Kostis responded with three takedowns and a two-point near
fall for the 15-4 major decision.
157: Giuliette (AU) dec. Powell
Powell's first-period take down gave him a 2-0 lead into the
second, when Giuliette managed to ride the entire period. Giuliette escaped in
the third, and a stall penalty leveled the bout, 2-2. Giuliette capped the
period with a takedown as Anderson notched its first decision, 4-2.
165: Blevins (ASU) pin Onofrio
Nationally-ranked Blevins had just a takedown in the first
period for a 2-0 advantage. He settled into the match and notched an escape and
takedown for a 5-0 lead before pinning Onofrio 40 seconds into the second
period.
174: Downs (ASU) MD Harper
After a scoreless first period, Downs went on the scoreboard
with an escape and takedown in the second. He added a three-point near fall to
carry a 6-0 edge into the final period. From neutral, Downs picked up a
takedown and earned an extra point on a stall penalty for a 9-0 MD.
184: Sutton (AU) dec. Hartley
Sutton scored the bout's first point on a second-period
escape. Anderson's sophomore picked up a pair of takedowns in the period while
Hartley's escapes left him trailing 5-2. The gap narrowed as Hartley picked up
a stall point and escape, but time expired with Sutton in position for a riding point and 6-4 win.
197: Newton (AU) dec. Weiss
Newton picked up a first-period takedown and a Weiss escape
made it 2-1 heading into the second. Weiss managed a reversal in the second,
but Newton turned the tables as well. In front 4-3, Newton earned an escape and
takedown to clinch a 7-3 victory.
285: Duke (AU) dec. Durfee
The teams' biggest wrestlers struggled to score in
regulation, as the pair exchanged escapes as the bout's only points of the
first seven minutes. In sudden victory, Duke's takedown marked the only
offensive points of the bout to take a 3-1 decision.
vs. Belmont Abbey
133: Johnson (ASU) dec. Nelson
Johnson scored first with a takedown early; his 2-0 lead
would hold until the third period when he added an escape and finally a
riding-time point for a 4-0 decision.
141: Kessler (ASU) pin Alley
Kessler's two first-period takedowns built a 4-1 advantage,
and he picked up an escape, takedown and near fall to add six more points in
the second before pinning Alley in the fifth minute.
149: Kostis (ASU) pin Wilkins
Kostis made quick work of Wilkins, notching a pair of
takedowns before his pin after 98 seconds.
157: Powell (ASU) pin Moses
Powell recovered from his earlier missteps and earned the
day's fastest pin in 73 seconds.
165: Blevins (ASU) pin Maumoynier
Blevins wasted little time with Maumoynier, pinning the
sophomore in the third minute of the first period.
174: Johnson (ASU) pin Seymour
In his first collegiate dual, Johnson scored first but went
on to allow Seymour to take control and earn back points. Before the period
concluded, Johnson got back on top and closed the bout for the Apps'
fifth-straight pin.
184: Trotman (ASU) TF Bartley
Trotman handled Bartley for three takedowns in the first.
Leading 6-2 after one, Trotman's repeated takedowns and a three-point near fall
ran up a 20-6 advantage after the first five minutes. In the third period, it
was an eventual stalling penalty that gave Trotman the deciding point and his
first tech. fall of the year.
197: Weiss (ASU) dec. Rees
Weiss took down Rees, but the Crusader answered back as the
pair remained tied 3-3 after the first period. In the second, Weiss got the
escape and a stalling point, and after a scoreless third, Weiss slipped by with
the 5-3 win.
285: Cummings (ASU) dec. Sharp
Once again, the heavies had trouble getting on the board,
and neither wrestler scored in the first period. Starting from bottom, Cummings
got an escape for the 1-0 lead, and a repeated stalling penalty on Sharp gave
the Mountaineer a 2-0 advantage. Sharp picked up his escape in the third, but
Cummings held on for the 2-1 victory.
