STATESBORO, Ga. - After leading 1-0 with 15 minutes to play,
Appalachian State women's soccer (5-8-1, 1-4-1 SoCon) dropped two late goals
and fell to Georgia Southern (4-7-2, 2-3-1 SoCon) in Southern Conference action
at Eagle Field on Sunday afternoon.
Appalachian senior Katy Dodd had an early look in the 10th minute,
but her shot was saved at the last moment by the Eagles' defense. The Black and
Gold held a 5-4 advantage in first-half shots but both teams failed to score
before the intermission.
Dodd finally put ASU on the scoreboard in the 78th minute.
Mountaineer Sydney Hill crossed the ball into the six-yard box, and Dodd was
able to send it home for her third goal of the season.
The Mountaineer goal snapped a 277 minute goalless streak for GSU goalkeeper Katie Merson, which spanned three matches. Merson finished the afternoon with seven saves.
With less than five minutes to play, Georgia Southern came
up with an equalizer goal. Sydney Keer served up a free kick, and Carlee Storey
was able to head the ball into the net to level the game at 1-1.
The game seemed destined for overtime, but in the final
seconds of the game, Georgia Southern's Alex Murphy fired a bullet at the net.
ASU keeper Amy Kolowsky was able to partially deflect the ball, but it caromed
off the crossbar and into the net to give GSU the come-from-behind win.
Officially, the goal was scored with one second remaining in the game.
Kolowsky finished with two saves on the day. While freshman
Jamie Lockie recorded a game-high four shots with three on goal.
Appalachian returns home this weekend for two more league
games. The Apps will host Samford on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. On Sunday,
Chattanooga comes to Boone for a 1 p.m. game.
