CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Hoping to end the season on a high note, Appalachian State women's soccer (6-11-2, 2-7-2 SoCon) was dismissed by a 1-0 loss to Southern Conference opponent Western Carolina (9-9-1, 4-7 SoCon) at Catamount Athletic Complex on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, The Citadel upset College of Charleston, 3-2, to mathematically exclude Appalachian from earning a berth in the SoCon Tournament. With the win, Western Carolina secured the eighth and final spot in the playoffs.

Appalachian pushed the tempo early, as senior Sydney Hill sent a shot off the WCU crossbar just three minutes into the game. Together with classmate Katy Dodd, the pair recorded the first three shots of the match.

The Catamounts collected themselves and took control of the game, making the remaining 12 shots of the half, one of which found its target.

In the 26th minute, WCU freshman Christina White scored her first career goal on a header inside the box. Christine Kaznowski made the assist as Western Carolina took the first-half lead.

Freshman Julia Holz and Hill picked up shots early in the second half, but the game remained in the hands of Western Carolina.

The Catamounts went on a run of seven unanswered shots, stalling any Appalachian comeback. Junior Taylor Dunlap had the Apps' final shot with three and a half minutes to play, but WCU held on for the shutout to extend the Catamounts' season.

Amy Kolowsky made five saves in net for the Mountaineers. While Hill notched a team-high three shots.

The Mountaineers end the season with six wins, are one more than last year.

Season highlights included a September 4 overtime win over Longwood, the team's first extra-time victory since 2007. On October 2 , the Apps beat Wofford 1-0 to pick up their first conference overtime win since 2004.

Individually, ASU's Kolowsky played in goal for every second of her redshirt-freshman season. Her four shutouts on the year tie for ninth-most in team history. With 95 saves, she tallied the seventh-most stops in a season by a Mountaineer and already sits in sixth on the career-saves leaderboard. Kolowsky's 1.35 goals-against average is fifth-best among ASU keepers with at least 1,000 career minutes.

Hill's team-high six assists are fourth most by an Appalachian player, one shy of the team record. Her career total of 10 assists places her seventh in the Mountaineer record book.

Holz led the team in goals scored with five this season. Dodd scored four in 2011 to finish her career with 10.
