Field Hockey Ready For Final Regular Season Games

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University field hockey ends the regular season with a trip to Davidson, N.C.  on Wednesday to face off with Davidson and to Farmville, Va. on Saturday to square off with NorPac East Division leaders, Longwood.

 

The Mountaineers went 1-1 last week with a 5-0 setback to Central Michigan last Saturday and a 3-2 victory over Liberty.

 

The Lady Flames (5-9) took an early lead when Mercedes Cox netted her third goal of the season early in the 4th-minute.  The Mountaineers (2-14) would responded with a goal of their own when junior Megan High scored her first goal of the season off a penalty corner assist from sophomore Brooklyn Shearer.  Appalachian would end the half all tied up 1-1 with a penalty corner opportunity with a few minutes left in the first-half.

 

Junior Casey Lammando gave ASU a 2-1 lead when she knocked in her first goal of the season in the 48th-minute.  Liberty's Lindsey Hanks scored the equalizing goal early in the 50th-minute.

 

Freshman Brooke Angellella found a wide-open senior Kelsey Dorset to score the game-winning goal for the Mountaineers in the 57th-minute.

 

Senior Bridgette Street made a big save on a Lady Flames' penalty corner with four minutes left in the contest.  Liberty received one last penalty corner with 30 seconds left in the game, but the Mountaineers stellar defense forced a Liberty shot wide to seal the victory for the Apps.

 

Shearer leads ASU with four goals and two assists for 10 points, while senior Kelly Allaband has four goals with one assist. Freshman Jessi Stuart has added three goals with a team-high three assists. Street has played 1008:26 in goal and tallied 124 saves with a .670 save percentage.

 

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS

 

Davidson (8-7, 2-2 NorPac) is currently second in the East Division, and fell to Longwood last Saturday in 3-2 thriller.  Finley Amato leads the squad with 10 goals and five assists, and is followed by Christine Rua with eight goals and three assists.  The Wildcats are being out scored this season 36-33 and out shot 226-216.  Goalkeeper Sarah Fisher has made 81 saves with a .698 saves percentage and a 2.54 goals per game.

 

SCOUTING THE LANCERS

 

Longwood (10-8, 4-1 NorPac) needs a win against ASU to claim the NorPac East Division title.  The Lancers defeated Davidson 3-2 on last Saturday.

 

Longwood is led by Stacey de Grandhomme with 12 goals and one assist for 25 points, while freshman Jessica Diaz|Chesapeake (Western Branch) has added six goals and two assists for 14 points. Kaye Goulding has played 1186:04 in goal for the Lancers and has allowed 1.71 goals while posting a .801 save percentage with two shutouts.
