CHARLESTON, S.C. – Appalachian State volleyball saw its five-match winning streak come to an end in a 3-0 loss at College of Charleston on Friday, Oct. 21 at TD Arena.
The Mountaineers (15-8, 7-2) lost for just the second time in their past 12 matches and fell into a tie with the Cougars (16-9, 7-2) for the best record in SoCon play.
Charleston trailed 16-15 midway through the first set before stringing together a 9-1 run to snag a 24-17 lead in the late stages. Appalachian rallied to make it 24-20 before Kerstin Koehler gave the Cougar the decisive point with a kill to make it 25-20.
The second set went the same way by the same score as CofC again came away with a 25-20 set victory to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the match.
ASU led for the first part of the second set before the Cougars battle back to take an 11-10 lead. The Mountaineers were able to tie the set at 16-16 but were never able to retake the lead as Charleston netted four of the final five points for a 25-20 win.
The third set saw both teams battle to early leads before the Apps jumped out by one (16-15) late but the Cougars slammed the door shut with a 10-0 run to pick up a 25-16, match-clinching victory.
ASU hit just .084 for the match, its lowest total of the season, while Charleston hit .190. Alison Blasingame and Maggie Seeds led the Mountaineers with eight kills each while Courtney Rhein picked up 13 digs.
Kasey Sauls had a team-high 24 assists to put herself just 51 assists from 3,000 for her career. Seeds, who ad two block assists, moved int ninth place in ASU history with 238 block assists.
The loss marked the first time that Appalachian State has been swept since falling to Georgetown by a 3-0 final on Sept 16. The Apps return to action at 6 p.m. tomorrow at The Citadel.
