BOONE, N.C. - EU's Kendall Stanley netted the fatal goal in the 74th minute, as Appalachian State women's soccer (5-10-2, 1-6-2 SoCon) fell to Southern Conference opponent Elon (6-7-4, 4-3-2 SoCon) in the Mountaineers' home finale Thursday night at ASU Soccer Stadium.

"Elon's a great team with excellent organization," commented head coach Sarah Strickland. "We created our chances but couldn't pull it off."

Before the game, Appalachian's graduating seniors Katy Dodd and Sydney Hill were honored for their accomplishments as members of the ASU women's soccer program.

In their final home game of the season, the Mountaineers seemed determined to win the game for their seniors. "It was nice to have the girls working for [us]," said Dodd. "It makes you want to play hard for your teammates who are working hard for you."

Appalachian out-shot Elon by a 13-7 margin but failed to get any shots in the back of the net. ASU's best chance came in the the 66th minute, as Julia Holz fired a shot that deflected off Elon keeper Kate Murphy. The ball rebounded to Appalachian's Callie Johnson, who fired it back at the goal, but Murphy was able to get in position to make a second quick save.

Murphy finished the day with a season-high nine saves.

Near the midpoint of the second half, Stanley broke free down the left side off a pass from Simi Dhaliwal and scored a perfectly-placed crossing shot to lift the Phoenix to the 1-0 win.

ASU keeper Amy Kolowsky notched four saves in the game, while Dodd recorded a game-high four shots.

"Their goal was phenomenal," added Strickland. "It is frustrating because our players are out there doing good things, but I'm proud that we never have a game that they aren't out their working as hard as they can."

Appalachian takes to the road for its final two games of the season. The Mountaineers travel to face UNCG for a 2 p.m. game on Sunday, Oct. 23 before concluding the season at Western Carolina on Wednesday, Oct. 26.
