BOONE, N.C. - Despite an early goal by ASU senior Katy Dodd, Appalachian State women's soccer (5-9-1, 1-5-1 SoCon) fell to Southern Conference opponent Samford (7-5-2, 5-0-2 SoCon) in a double-overtime game at ASU Soccer Stadium on Friday night.

"It was a difficult loss," noted head coach Sarah Strickland. "Samford is an outstanding team and the most-organized squad we've seen this year. We did a good job keeping possession, not letting long balls get behind us and staying composed on the ball."

The Apps struck first as senior Sydney Hill served a cross from the right side and caught Dodd for a header goal in the fifth minute. The goal was Dodd's fourth of the season and Hill's team-high fifth assist.

Samford struck back in the 29th minute as Michelle Moll found Brittany Hoffman for the equalizer goal. Her shot from the left side caught the right edge of the goal to level the score at 1-1.

After a tough-fought second half, Samford held a narrow 13-12 edge in shots during regulation.

With less than five minutes to play in the second extra period, Samford's Joy Grove fired a long shot that narrowly found the net to give the Bulldogs the 2-1 win. Trine Taule had her third assist of the season on the shot.

ASU goalkeeper Amy Kolowsky had 10 saves in the game, matching her season high. Julia Holz paced the Mountaineers with five shots (two on goal), while Dodd and Hill each had three on goal.

The game was Appalachian's third-straight double-overtime game at home. The team tied Furman, 0-0, on Sept. 30 and defeated Wofford, 1-0, on Oct. 2.

Strickland continued, "It's tough to lose, but I genuinely believe Samford is the best team in the league and will go on to win the conference."

Appalachian rounds out the weekend by hosting Chattanooga on Sunday, Oct. 16. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at ASU Soccer Stadium at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
