BOONE, N.C.- With a goal of raising 3,000 dollars for breast cancer education and research, Appalachian State University volleyball has expanded its annual Dig Pink match to a Dig Pink weekend, set for October 2 and 3, when ASU hosts Southern Conference North Division rivals Elon and UNCG in two pivotal matches. The Mountaineers will square off against the Phoenix at 4 p.m. on October 2 and then battle the Spartans at 5 p.m. on October 3.
The Black and Gold will partner with the Side-Out Foundation for Dig Pink, and join a total of 540 teams across the country including 154 college squads and three other conference schools participating in the noteworthy cause.
Dig Pink, is a Breast Cancer Awareness Rally being held all of October to raise awareness and funds for the disease that affects so many. The Side-Out Foundation has paired up with Dig Pink in order to spread awareness of breast cancer and raise funds for the discovery of a cure for breast cancer. Every year the foundation hosts hundreds of featured high school and college matches across the country to help educate and raise funds to eradicate this terrible disease. Proceeds go directly towards the fight against Breast Cancer.
Like last year, ASU will be wearing commemorative pink jerseys at both matches and the program encourages all those in attendance at the matches to don pink as well.
Over the past three years, the Apps have raised over $6000 for Dig Pink, and are looking forward to another successful year.
Head coach
Matt Ginipro is excited to have his program continue its efforts with Dig Pink and raise money for such a good cause.
"We are proud to do our part in the battle against breast cancer again this year," Ginipro said. " I am sure everyone knows someone who has been affected by this disease, so it hits home for a lot of people. Our fans have been huge supporters of our Dig Pink efforts over the past three years and we're looking forward to another successful year. Whether it is dollars or pennies, every donation helps and goes towards a great cause. We also can't wait to see our rowdy fans sporting their best pink outfits during our Dig Pink Weekend against Elon and UNCG."
