FARMVILLE, VA.- For the first time in head coach Brandi Alexander's tenure at Appalachian State University field hockey begins the season 2-0 after a 7-1 win over Siena College.
For the second match in a row, sophomore Lesley Thomas began the Apps scoring frenzy only eight minutes in.
The Mountaineers scored 14 minutes later off Caitlin Counts' corner. Counts flung the ball to Lauren Kloeppinger who set up the shot for Jenn Heiss. Heiss then drilled the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Counts was not finished with her offensive attack; With 20 seconds remainging in the first half, Kloeppinger assisted Counts in notching her first goal of the season.
In the start of the second half, the Saints switched goalkeepers hoping to stop the Black and Gold but little could be done to hault the Apps' offensive threats.
Lisa Charney would start off the second half by scoring, make it back-to-back matches. Her goal, which was assisted by Heiss, would put Appalachian up 4-0.
Later in the second half, Charney found her self dishing the ball off to Kelsey Dorset, who scored her first goal of the season. Dorset did not wait long for her second because five minutes later Counts flicked a shot in the air to Dorset, and she slapped it into the upper corner.
Sophomore transfer Megan High got her ASU debut in the second half, and it took her only a few minutes to showcase her skills by tallying her first goal. High's goal capped the Mountaineers' scoring at seven.
Jenn Reich scored the Saint's lone goal of the game.
Overall, the Apps outshot the Saints 22-10.
Appalachian's scoring power gives it 11 goals on the season after only two games, a feat that took seven games last fall.
Alexander and her squad have a week off from action, until they return to the High Country to make their 2010 home debut at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Sunday, September 5 against Towson at 1 p.m.
