Field Hockey Defeats Ball State in Overtime

FARMVILLE, VA.- Emily Knapp began her field hockey career at Appalachian State University with a bang, scoring two goals, with her second serving as the game-winner in a 4-3 overtime victory against Ball State.

The Cardinals (1-1) came out firing with Brandi Mixell notching the first goal only 42 seconds into the match. Lesley Thomas answered two minutes later to score her first career goal to tie it up.

ASU (1-0) allowed another goal early in the second half, before Knapp rebounded a ball and slapped it into the back of the net for her first career and game-tying goal.

The Black and Gold found themselves trailing again with 33 seconds remaining until last season's team points leader Lisa Charney drilled a ball past BSU goalkeeper Morgan Hammer. Jenn Heiss was credited with the assist to Charney.

This win marks the second-straight year that Appalachian has opened the season with a triumph in extra time (Sacred Heart, 3-2).

The Mountaineers return to the field in Farmville, Va. tomorrow at 3 p.m. to face the Siena Saints in their season opener.
