Hobson Becomes All-Time Hits Leader in Extra-Inning Win

April 3, 2010

BOONE, N.C. - Second baseman Wes Hobson became Appalachian State University baseball's all-time hits leader in a 5-4, 10-inning win over Furman on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.

Not only did Hobson become Appalachian's all-time hits leader with a 4-for-5 effort, but his clutch hits in the seventh and 10th innings were integral to the Mountaineers' come-from-behind victory.

ASU (17-6-1, 4-6-1 SoCon) trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Hobson blasted a a two-out, two-run home run to left center field that gave the Mountaineers a 4-3 lead and tied Hobson with former teammate Isaac Harrow for the school record of 260 career hits.

The celebration was short-lived, however, as Furman's Paul Nitto hit his second home run of the game with one out in the top of the eighth to knot the score at 4-4. The solo shot to left field came against Mountaineer closer Chris Patterson and marked the first blown save by an Appalachian closer since 2008.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the 10th, when Hobson led off the inning with his record-breaking 261st career hit, a clean single through the left side of the infield. Following the leadoff single, David Towarnicky battled out of a 1-2 hole to draw a walk, Jeremy Dowdy laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt and Tyler Zupcic was intentionally walked to load the bases for freshman Ryan Stetson.

Stetson delivered in the clutch with a line-drive single into left field that brought Hobson home from third with the game-winning run.

Despite Stetson's first career walk-off hit, the hero of the afternoon was Hobson. The senior not only went collected four of the Mountaineers' nine hits in the record-breaking performance, but he also accounted for four of ASU's five runs with three RBI and one scored.

After surrendering the game-tying homer in the eighth, Patterson settled in to allow just two hits over three innings of work. The Southern Conference's saves leader (7) earned the victory to even his record at 1-1 on the season.

Nitto led Furman (8-19, 2-9 SoCon) by going 3-for-5 with the two home runs and two RBI. Stephen Gary (0-1), the fourth of five Paladin pitchers on the afternoon, was tagged with the loss after not retiring either of the batters that he faced in the 10th.
