BOONE, N.C.- Anxiously awaiting the start of the 2010 campaign, Appalachian State University volleyball announced another strong addition to its already stellar incoming class for the upcoming season and an exciting piece of news for all fans.
Wagner Joins ASU for 2010Already having five highly touted newcomers joining the Black and Gold in 2010, junior
Anna Wagner will cap off the Mountaineer roster, making four freshman, one sophomore, and Wagner being the lone incoming junior to join the team. The Lincoln, Nebraska native comes to Appalachian State after having played at both Iowa Western Community College and Florida Gulf Coast.
While at Iowa Western, Wagner helped guide her team to a fourth place finish at the 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament. She was also named District C Player of the Week, and picked up all-tournament team honors at the Molten Classic and the Hutchinson Tournament.
She spent last season playing at Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Myers, Fla. Wagner saw action in 25 matches, making 24 starts, while averaging 2.45 kills, 1.86 digs and 0.66 blocks per set. The outside hitter recorded double-digit kills in nine matches, with her best outing of the season coming on November 7 against Mercer, when she tallied a season-high 18 kills, to go along with 12 digs and five blocks. She also helped her squad advance to the finals of the Atlantic Sun Tournament before falling to Lipscomb 3-0.
Head Coach
Matt Ginipro is thrilled about the addition of Wagner.
"Having a player of Anna's caliber show up at our door was a wonderful surprise for us this spring semester," Ginipro said. "She has experience competing for a conference title last year at FGCU and for a national championship during her time at Iowa Western. Anna's personality and competitive drive meshes perfectly with our team's culture. She is another great addition to ASU volleyball, and I'm looking forward to getting the team back in the gym in August."
Admission to All Home Games FreeCoach Ginipro and the Appalachian State volleyball staff have announced that admission to all home volleyball games will be free for 2010. In an effort to get more fans to the Holmes Center and create an atmosphere intimidating to opponents, the Black and Gold hope that by making admission free more fans will come to the Holmes Center and watch the Mountaineers compete.
ASU begins its grueling preseason on August 9 and then kicks off the 2010 season on August 27, when the Apps travel to High Point, N.C. to participate in the High Point Tournament. The first match of the tournament for ASU is set for August 27 at 4:30 p.m. against N.C. A&T.
