Baseball Series Opener Suspended in Fifth Inning

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Friday night's Southern Conference baseball series opener between Appalachian State University and Samford was suspended due to rainwith the score tied at 7-7 in the top of the fifth inning. The game will resume on Saturday at 8 p.m. EDT at SU's Joe Lee Griffin Stadium.

Wes Hobson homered twice with a walk and three RBI in three plate appearances on Friday night, raising his SoCon-leading batting average to .423. Ryan Stetson also homered for the Mountaineers, who overcame a 4-2 deficit after three innings to take a 7-4 lead in the top of the fourth, only to squander the advantage in the bottom of the stanza.

Trailing 4-2 with two outs in the top of the fourth, Stetson blasted a three-run homer to left center field that gave Appalachian a 5-4 lead. After a Hector Crespo single, Hobson hit his second bomb of the evening and 11th of the season to stretch the ASU advantage to 7-4. All five runs were unearned thanks to an error by Bulldog second baseman Michael Johnson earlier in the inning.

However, the Apps returned the favor in the bottom of the frame when an error by shortstop Doug Jones led to three unearned runs that knotted the game at 7-7 before rain put an end to the evening's action.

Following the resumption of the series opener on Saturday evening, the three-game set will conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at a time to be determined.
