SALEM, Va.- Appalachian State University wrestling had three wrestlers place at the third annual Virginia Tech Open on Sunday at the Selma Civic Center in Salem, Va.
Junior Savva Kostis started off his day by earning the decision over Marcel Clopton of Kent State, 7-6. He came back and pinned Dave Ebbot of Virginia in 4:13, but lost his only match of the day to Joey Metzler of Old Dominion, 6-2.
Kostis rolled on to two more victories over Max Mayfield of Iowa State, 6-4 and tallied the major decision over Cam Hurd (Virginia Tech), 16-8 to take fifth place in the 149-pound division.
Junior Kyle Blevins had the best day on the mat for the Mountaineers by far as he rolled off four victories and did not lose a decision to take first place in 165. Blevins recorded a major decision over Brett Miller of UNC Greensboro, 10-1 in his first match, while earning another victory over Thomas Scotton of UNC in a tight match, 3-1. Blevins got his third win against Matt Epperly of Virginia Tech, 8-4 and continued on to get a forfeit in his final match.
Redshirt junior Austin Trotman went 3-2 on the day as he took sixth place in the 184-pound category. Trotman earned a 6-0 decision over Casey Newburg of Kent State in his first match. In Trotman's next bout, he lost a close contest to UNC's Antonio Giorgio, 5-2. Trotman then tallied two wins by pinning Michael Duckworth of Ohio University in 56 seconds and hanging in a match against Mick Tenpenny of UNC, 3-2. In Trotman's last match of the day, UNCG's Andrew Saunders edged him 7-4.
ASU returns to competition next as they host the Mountaineer Duals on Sunday, Nov. 14 with action starting at 10 a.m.
