BOONE, N.C.-Appalachian State University wrestling finished its final preseason tuneup on Tuesday night as the program held its annual Black and Gold Match in Varsity Gym.

After falling last year, the Black team stormed back this year and defeated the Gold team, 21-16.

Sophomore Tony Gravely got the Black team on the board first as he defeated freshman Dominic Parisi, 5-4, in the 125-pound category. In the second 125-pound match of the evening, sophomore Brett Boston scored a major decision over junior Weston Haney, 10-2.

Freshman Chris Johnson topped freshman Acton Pifer in the 133-pound division, 5-1, while junior Mike Kessler tallied the second major decision for the Black squad in the 141-pound category as he took down freshman Austin Brown, 10-2.

The Gold team got its first points of the match as junior Savva Kostis defeated freshman Russ Benner, 5-4, in the 149-pound section.

In the 157-pound round, senior Chip Powell notched the quick pin on junior Travis Puckett to tally more points for the Black team.

Both teams recorded major decisions in the 165 and 184 bouts as junior Kyle Blevins took down sophomore John Blakely, 10-2, for the Black team and redshirt junior Austin Trotman scored points for the Gold squad as he took care of sophomore Jon Hartley, 15-5.

Freshman Branden Lietz defeated junior Carter Downs, 7-5, to take the 174-pound round.

The most exciting bout of the night was in the heavyweight category. Sophomore Paul Glover and freshman Marc Tyson were tied with each other 3-3 and headed into several overtimes before Tyson was awarded the bout by coach's decision.

Appalachian opens the regular season on Nov. 7 as they head to Blacksburg, Va. to take part in the Virginia Tech Open with their first home meet on Nov. 14 as they host the Mountaineer Duals, with action from Varsity Gym starting at 10 a.m.
