Wrestling Sweeps Mountaineer Duals
BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University wrestling (3-0) swept the Mountaineer Duals defeating Anderson, Belmont Abbey and Gardner-Webb on Sunday in Varsity Gym.

Sophomore Tony Gravely got Appalachian on the board first by scoring a major decision over Anderson's Andrew Rankin, 17-7 at 125. Freshman Chris Johnson, juniors Kyle Benson and Savva Kostis also earned decisions over Trojans before juniors Travis Puckett and Kyle Blevins tallied back-to-back major decisions over Nicholas Giulietti, 10-2 and Jordan Lide, 12-3 to keep the Black and Gold on pace. Freshman Branden Lietz and junior Carter Downs also notched decisions before reigning SoCon Wrestler of the Year Austin Trotman recorded a major decision over Zoi Ouellette, 10-2 at 197 pounds. The Apps were clicking on all cylinders going into the heavyweight division before freshman Marc Tyson dropped a close bout to Chase Duke, 1-2. The Mountaineers defeated Anderson 31-3 to begin their morning on the mat.

ASU then took on Gardner-Webb and Belmont Abbey to end their day. Sophomore Brett Boston took over at 125 and scored the fall over Gardner-Webb's Brett Kostern in 5:18 and earned a decision over Belmont Abbey's Shane Summerlin, 6-4. Junior Mike Kessler went 1-1 on the afternoon after losing a close bout to Richie Spicel of Gardner-Webb, 0-4, but bounced back to score the major decision over Belmont Abbey's Will James, 8-0.

After earning a major decision in his first match of the morning, Blevins came back and scored a technical fall over Gardner-Webb's Erin O'Dell, 23-7 in 7:45, but faced a tougher opponent in Belmont Abbey's Jake Varilek. It came down to the last set, but Blevins defeated Varilek, 2-0.

Kostis earned the Apps' other technical fall of the afternoon when he took down Belmont Abbey's David Saley, 17-2 in 4:15.

Appalachian took down the Runnin' Bulldogs, 32-9 and finished off the Crusaders, 27-6 to close the event.

The Mountaineers take their momentum into Philadelphia, Pa. as they take part in the Keystone Classic on Sunday, Nov. 21.
