Wrestling Opens Up Season With Intrasquad Match

BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University wrestling opened its 2010 slate on Thursday night in Varsity Gym as the Mountaineers competed against each other in the annual intrasquad match.

The Mountaineers matched up with each other to setup the seedings for the Black and Gold match, which is Tuesday (Nov. 2) at 7 p.m. in Varsity Gym, and to determine who the starters will be for the rest of the season.

The Apps were put through three, two minute halves on two separate mats where they were under the supervision of referees for the second consecutive year.

Each mat also featured two exhibition matches that did not count towards the impending seedings.

Mat number two proved to be an exciting mat with freshman Riley Keen needing extra time to earn the decision over freshman Collins Creech, 8-6. In the 165-pound matchup, junior Kyle Blevins used a technical fall to put away freshman Dominick Vetell, 18-3. In the 133-pound match, freshman Acton Pifer, who was down early in the match, came back to defeat freshman Chris Johnson 5-3, earning the fall at the buzzer.

On mat number one, the excitement built up in the 149-pound match between freshman Aaron Scott and freshman Russell Benner as Benner used a two-point takedown at the buzzer to earn a 3-1 victory.

Appalachian opens the regular season on Nov. 7 as they head to Blacksburg, Va. to take part in the Virginia Tech Open.

The first home meet for the Mountaineers is Nov. 14 as they host the Mountaineer Duals, with action from Varsity Gym starting at 10 a.m.
