BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University field hockey had a late surge from junior Kelsey Dorset, but Davidson escaped with a 1-0 victory in ASU's final home match of the season.
The Mountaineers (5-9, 1-3 NorPac) continued its early first half voes
when Gary Robinson of Davidson (11-5, 3-0 NorPac) scored the first and
only goal of the match five minutes in.
Appalachian was out shot 16-6 by Davidson, who leads the NorPac in total points with 121.
After allowing the early score, junior Bridgette Street held her own in
goal by saving nine balls. Street also received some help by fellow
sophomore Casey Lammando and senior Jenn Heiss as each of them recorded a
defensive save.
Thanks to a handful of great defensive plays, the
Black and Gold was only down by one late in the match. So with 3:42
remaining in the match, Dorset maneuvered by a Wildcat defender and
drove a ball into the cage's post. Dorset's shot was three inches away
from sending App into overtime.
ASU looks to pull an upset on Sunday as it hits the road to face No. 14 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on at 2 p.m.
