BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's basketball seeks a third-straight win on Saturday as UNC Greensboro treks to the Holmes Center at 3 p.m.
The Mountaineers have won two-straight Southern Conference games to move to 3-2 in league play following Wednesday's 89-65 triumph over Elon. The contest was up for grabs for the first 30 minutes before the Apps took control with a 24-6 run down the stretch.
Kellen Brand matched his season high with 20 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists.
Seniors Ryann Abraham and Josh Hunter also tied their top point totals of the season with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Appalachian committed a season-low seven turnovers in the game and limited the Phoenix to three offensive rebounds and zero second-chance points.
It was the first home SoCon win for ASU, which now owns a 6-2 record in the HCC.
Scouting the Spartans
• UNC Greensboro fell 79-69 at Western Carolina on Thursday despite 24 points and 14 rebounds from Ben Stywall.
• Stywall leads the team with 13.4 points and 9.6 boards per game.
• UNCG has just one win in its last 11 games, an 88-78 triumph against Furman.
• The Spartans' lone conference road win was a 73-40 drubbing of Samford on December 5.

• Saturday marks the 32nd meeting between the Southern Conference foes.
• UNC Greensboro won three games in a row before the Mountaineers snapped the streak with a 70-69 in Fleming Gym last February.
• A.J. Highsmith knocked down the game-winning trey in the victory last season to avenge an overtime loss at the Holmes Cener earlier in the year.
• Appalachian is 9-7 at home against UNCG, but the Spartans snapped a three-game HCC winning streak with an 85-83 win in OT last season.
• The Apps trailed in the waning seconds of regulation before Donald Sims tied the game with a long three-pointer to beat the buzzer and send the game to overtime.
• Head coach Buzz Peterson won all eight meetings with UNCG as ASU's head coach from 1996-2000.
ASU heads to Statesboro on Wednesday to face Georgia Southern at 7 p.m. in the first of two meetings with the SoCon South foe.
