BOONE, N.C. - Austin Trotman and Kyle Blevins won two matches apiece but Appalachian State University wrestling dropped its home opener to UNC Greensboro and Virginia Thursday night in Varsity Gym.
Appalachian lost the first match of the night to UNCG 28-13. The Spartans started fast by winning the first two matches of the night to build a 9-0 lead.
Savva Kostis cut into the lead when he pinned Matt Barbo at the 4:11 mark at 149 pounds. Kostis had built a 7-0 lead on two takedowns and a near fall, before pinning Barbo.
Travis Sheehy built the Spartans' lead back to six with an 11-4 decision over Chip Powell, but ASU fought back to its closest score of the night when Blevins beat Victor Hojilla by major decision to put the score at 12-10. Blevins scored the first points of the match with a takedown with just five seconds left in the first period. Blevins continued with a three point near fall in the second period and was dominant in third, scoring a takedown and near fall in the final period.
Austin Trotman dominated Andrew Saunders at 184 for his second win at the weight class. Trotman delivered three takedowns in the first period. Saunders came back to make the score 8-7 but a reversal put Trotman up by three. Trotman ended the second period with a three point near fall and closes out the match with a takedown for the final 15-7 margin.
The Mountaineers were unable to keep the momentum falling the three of the final four matches of the night.
ASU won the first match against the Cavaliers but were unable to hang with the No. 18 team in the country, falling 27-12.
Jacob Earp gave the Mountaineers a 6-0 lead against Virginia by pinning Matt Snyder with 49 seconds left in the third period. Earp had been down 4-2, but slipped on top of Snyder and with his back on Snyder got the pin call.
Blevins picked up his second win of the night with a hard fought 2-1 win over Beau Fisher. Blevins scored the first point by escaping to begin the second period. Fisher was able to escape from Blevins late in the third period but Blevins earned the riding time point to earn the victory.
Trotman also earned his second win of the night with a 10-6 win over No. 21 Mike Salopek. Trotman started fast scoring three first period takedowns, but Salopek was able to escape all three times. Salopek cut the lead to 7-6 with a third period takedown but Trotman escaped and scored a late takedown for the final margin.
The Mountaineers continue their homestand with another doubleheader on Sunday when they host Franklin & Marshall and Belmont Abbey starting at 1 p.m.
