Wrestling Hosts UNC Greensboro, Virginia in Home Opener

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University wrestling hosts UNCG Greensboro and Virginia in the home opener Thursday night, starting at 6 p.m. The Mountaineers will wrestle UNCG at 6 p.m. and Virginia at 7:30 p.m at Varsity Gym.

The Mountaineers come into the match with a 2-6 record after defeating Campbell 43-4 last Saturday. Savva Kostis has won six of his last eight matches and is second on the team with 12 wins. Dylan Temple is 2-0 since moving up to 197 pounds and leads the Apps with 13 victories.

The Black and Gold will be looking to avenge losses to the Spartans and Cavaliers from last season. UNCG beat ASU 36-7 in last season's SoCon opener in Greensboro while UVA beat Appalachian 35-9 in Charlottesville.

UNC Greensboro comes into the match with a 1-4 overall record and is 1-0 in the SoCon after a 32-9 win over The Citadel.

Ivan Lopouchanski leads the Spartans with a 24-5 record at 141 while Peter Sturgeon is 24-10 at heavyweight.

Virginia is 10-3 on the year and ranked No. 18 in the country.

The Cavaliers are led by returning NCAA all-American Chris Henrich. Henrich is 20-2 on the year and No. 4 at 174 pounds. Brent Jones is 15-7 this season and ranked No. 11 at 197 while Danny Gonsor is ranked No. 17 at 157 pounds.

UNCG and Virginia will wrestle each other in the afternoon before traveling to the High Country to take on the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers will continue their homestand on Sunday when they host Franklin & Marshall and Belmont Abbey starting at 1 p.m.
