BOONE, N.C. - Paige Morrow scored her first goal of the season and
Caroline Clarke made nine saves as Appalachian State University women's soccer defeated Davidson 2-0 Sunday night.
Appalachian (5-4-1, 2-0) defeated Davidson (3-8,0-2) for just the second time in school history and is 2-0 to start SoCon play for the first time since 2006.
The Mountaineers started the scoring in the 26th minute when Morrow scored on a header off of a corner kick by
Sydney Hill. The goal was the first of the season for Morrow and the first assist of Hill's career.
Just before the goal, the Apps just missed an opportunity when Hill was called offsides on a would be goal.
Set plays would be a key for the night, as Appalachian made the score 2-0 when
Hannah Coad headed in an indirect kick by
Lindsay Jaffe. The goal is the first of Coad's career and the third career assist for Jaffe.
Despite being outshot 8-1 in the second half, the Apps made their shot count and the defense of Jaffe,
Leigh Morrow,
Katy Dodd and
Michelle Jewell, along with the solid goalkeeping of Clarke, kept the Wildcats off the board.
Clarke recorded her fifth shutout of the season, and third straight while Loring Ward made three saves in the loss.
The Mountaineers continue SoCon play as they travel to Chattanooga on Friday, Oct. 2 for a 7 p.m. match.
