BOONE, NC -- Appalachian State field hockey pushed its record to 5-5 on the 2009 season with a 3-0 non-conference win Sunday over Catawba at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
The Mountaineer offense wasted little time kicking into high gear as senior forward Jessie Harris scored just two minutes into the game off an assist from Hannah Martin. In the 25th minute, the Apps stretched the margin to 2-0 on junior Christine Zanowicz's first goal of the season off a feed from Kelsey Dorset. Four minutes later, Harris connected for the second time to put the Indians in a 3-0 hole as the teams went to intermission.
Catawba, which managed only four shots on goal for the day, was never able to pose a serious threat to the Mountaineer defense which gave coach Brandi Alexander the opportunity to substitute freely in the second half. All 20 players on the active roster saw action Sunday including junior goalkeeper Denise Adams, who spelled Bridgette Street in the second frame and maintained the shutout.
With five wins on the season, ASU is currently enjoying its most successful year since 2004. The Mountaineers have now won consecutive games for the third time in Alexander's tenure at Appalachian and could stretch the streak to three with a win next Friday against UC-Davis which is in its first year as a program.
The Apps will return to NorPac play next Friday when they meet up with UC-Davis in a neutral site match-up at Davidson.
