Boone, NC -- On a rainy night at Kidd Brewer Stadium, Appalachian State jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead behind two early goals from junior forward Nicole Morgan and held on in the second half to top Davidson 3-2 in both teams' NorPac opener.
Morgan wasted little time getting the Apps on the scoreboard, connecting in the game's third minute to put ASU on top 1-0. Just two minutes later, freshman forward Lisa Charney got in on the action when she found the back of the net off a nice assist from senior Jessie Harris. In the 13th minute, Morgan struck again from the top of the box, giving the Mountaineers a 3-0 cushion as the teams headed to intermission.
In the second frame, ASU's offense could not re-create their first half magic and never seriously threatened to score again. However, the defense stepped up in a major way to bring the Mountaineers home.
Davidson's Christina Ruia scored in the 49th minute to bring the Wildcats within two. Minutes later, freshman Annie Evans connected on a penalty stroke to cut App's lead to 3-2.
Davidson had several good looks to tie the match in the final five minutes, but those efforts were thwarted by the Mountaineer defense and some nifty net work by keeper Bridgette Street.
Street posted five saves on the night, bringing her NorPac leading total to 79.
The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow against 5-0 Rider at Kidd Brewer Stadium at 4 p.m.
