Volleyball Set for Tuesday Tilt at Charlotte

BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University volleyball looks to continue with its strong play, as the Mountaineers travel down the mountain Tuesday evening to take on the Charlotte 49ers in Halton Arena at 7 p.m.

About the Apps: ASU is 3-6 on the season, coming off a 3-0 win over Morgan State in the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational hosted by Winthrop over the weekend. Senior Maja Jechorek was impressive, as she had fourteen kills and fourteen digs in the first match against Winthrop, to go along with 13 kills, eight digs and two block assists in the team's final match of the tournament against the Bears. For her efforts she was named to the all-tournament team. Freshman Kelsey Kuehner has been solid on the offensive front as well for the Black and Gold, as the Ohio native is second on the team in kills behind Jechorek with 80 overall and a 2.58 attack percentage. Defensively, Cassie Engelgau leads the Apps with 131 digs on the season, averaging a little over four per game.

About the 49ers: Charlotte has a 4-6 mark overall, including a 2-1 home record. The contest against ASU ends Charlotte's four-match homestand. Over the course of the young season, UNCC has defeated Wake Forest 3-2, and fallen to Appalachian's SoCon foes Furman and Elon 3-0. Last weekend, Charlotte defeated James Madison and Presbyterian 3-0 in the Comfort Suites 49er Tournament before dropping a tough contest to Big 10 power Northwestern 3-1.

The Series: The Mountaineers lead the all-time series 18-14 with the Black and Gold defeating Charlotte 3-0 in the Appalachian Invitational last season.

ASU Ties: Head 49er coach Chris Redding, was the head coach at Appalachian from 1999-2002, posting a 44-79 overall record.

Up Next: Appalachian plays in its final regular-season tournament September 18-19, as the squad travels to Winston-Salem, N.C. to compete in the Black and Gold challenge hosted by Wake Forest. The Apps first match is slated for Friday September 18 at 4:30 p.m. against Liberty.
