Christina Gilboy scored the only goal of the match in the 88th minute off a pass from
Ruthie Lile to give Appalachian State University women's soccer an 1-0 win over Radford Monday night at Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
On the game-winner, Lile took the ball down the left side before centering a pass to Gilboy who knocked it past Radford goalkeeper Lisa Lubke into the right corner of the net.
The Mountaineers started the game on the attack, firing the first five shots of the game.
Taylor Dunlap took a centering pass from
Sydney Hill but her tap shot hit the left post. After the ball was kicked around in front of the goal,
Katy Dodd rifled a shot that was blocked by a Radford defender in front of the goal.
Appalachian keepers
Caroline Clarke and
Emma White both came up big in the combined shutout, the pair combined for eight saves and each made a save by tapping the ball over the net on a high shot.
ASU outshot the Highlanders 14-10 and earned more corner kicks by a 7-4 margin.
The Mountaineers go on the road for the season-opener on Friday, Aug. 28 when they take on Charlotte starting at 7 p.m.
