BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's basketball takes on Georgia Southern in its final regular season contest Saturday February 28. The contest is slated for a 1 p.m. tip off in the Holmes Center, with a pre-game ceremony honoring ASU's lone senior Brittany Mixon.
THE MOUNTAINEERS: Appalachian is coming off a dissapointing 74-60 loss to UNC Greensboro. A 12 point deficit at the break and 13-3 run by the Spartans in the opening minutes of second half play doomed the Black and Gold on Monday evening. Sade Means had yet another impressive outing, scoring a team-high 15 points to go along with seven rebounds. ASU is now on its longest SoCon losing streak of the season at four games.
THE EAGLES: The Eagles recently defeated Wofford to snap a two-game losing skid. Before beating the Terriers 62-61, GSU lost to Davidson and College of Charleston on their home floor. Offensively Ashley Melson paces Georgia Southern averaging 12.2 points per contest. On the boards J'Lisia Ogburn averages a team-high 5.6 boards per contest. GSU is currently in fifth in the SoCon standings.
THE SERIES: Georgia Southern holds the 28-13 series lead. The last time the two squads met was back on December 1. The contest saw the Apps fall 69-53, while Frances Hernandez poured in 19 points and GSU's Ashley Melson had a game-high 20 points. The Mountaineers are on a four-game losing skid to the Eagles dating back to the 2006-07 season. ASU's last win against GSU came back on January 20, 2007, in a 85-68 victory.
ASU vs. SOCON: The Apps are 6-13 on the season against conference opponents, surpassing their SoCon win total of the 2007-08 season and are currently tied for eighth place in the SoCon standings.ASU is in the top-five in five SoCon statistical categories, including third in steals, fourth in blocks, assists and offensive rebounds and fifth in rebounding margin.
UP NEXT: The Black and Gold hit the road for Chattanooga, Tenn. as the squad gears up for the 2009 Southern Conference Championships. The Apps will square off agianst Furman, at the number eight/nine seed, with game times and the full tournament bracket to be announced Monday March 2.
