Appalachian State University baseball christens a completed Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium this weekend with a pivotal three-game Southern Conference series against defending SoCon regular-season and tournament champion Elon. Game times are set for 3 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Smith Stadium (located on ASU's campus behind the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center).
Appalachian (4-1) is riding high coming into the weekend, fresh off a season-opening three-game sweep of defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Jacksonville State last weekend and a split of mid-week non-conference road tilts at Wake Forest and Gardner-Webb. In its most-recent outing, ASU hammered GWU, 11-5, behind a career-high seven RBI from senior third baseman Isaac Harrow.
The story of the young season has been the Mountaineer bullpen. ASU relievers are 2-0 with two saves and a 3.67 ERA over the season's first five games. Not including Tuesday's 15-3 setback at Wake Forest, opponents have managed just one earned run in 19.1 innings against the Apps' relief corps.
Elon (2-2), the preseason SoCon favorite, was also impressive in its first week of the season. The Phoenix took 2-of-3 games at traditional Southeastern Conference power Auburn before dropping a 4-1 mid-week decision at Atlantic Coast Conference stalwart NC State.
Despite the fact that Elon won the conference regular-season and tournament titles en route to an NCAA Regional appearance and 44-18 overall record, the Mountaineers got the best of the Phoenix last season, taking 2-of-3 games at Elon's Latham Park. The series victory included a ninth-inning rally against all-conference closer Thomas Girwood for a 9-3 triumph and an offensive explosion that set school records for hits (29) and runs in a 26-10 rout.
Single-game tickets for contests at Smith Stadium cost $5 for reserved seats and $3 for general admission. ASU students are admitted free with their printed student tickets. For ticket information, click
