BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's basketball looks to avenge an earlier season loss Saturday February 14, as the Mountaineers welcome top-tier Southern Conference opponent Samford to the Holmes Center. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
THE MOUNTAINEERS: Appalachian rallied from a 13 point second half deficit to overtake a pesky Wofford team, and notch a 72-68 win, ASU's sixth SoCon win of the season. Senior Brittany Mixon scored a game-high 20 points to go along with 14 boards, recording her sixth double-double of the season. 16 of her points came in the second half. Freshman guard Sade Means was impressive as well, with 15 points, seven boards, two assists and two steals. With the win ASU moves back into seventh place in the league standings.
THE BULLDOGS: Samford is on a two-game winning streak, having defeated College of Charleston and Georgia Southern both on their home floor.The Bulldog's last loss and just second SoCon defeat of the year, came at the hands of UNCG dropping a 49-37 decision on February 2. Savannah Hill and Emily London pace SU offensively, averaging 13.2, and 12.9 points per game. Hill also leads Samford on the glass, hauling in an average of 5.8 boards per contest.
THE SERIES: Samford holds a 1-0 series lead over ASU. The two squads last met on January 17, in Birmingham, when the Bulldogs downed the Apps 87-51.In the contest, Samford drained 13 3's and shot 53 percent from the field to hand the Black and Gold its worst loss of the season.
ASU vs. SOCON: The Apps are 6-9 on the season against conference opponents, surpassing their SoCon win total of the 2007-08 season and are currently in seventh place in the SoCon standings. ASU is in the top-five in five SoCon statistical categories, including second in the league in steals, third in offensive rebounds and fourth in field goal percentage, blocks and assists.
