BOONE, N.C- Appalachian State University men's track and field posted yet another strong performance at the Valentine Open, returning home to the Holmes Center for the first time in over a month Thursday afternoon.
Senior John Svoboda captured first, setting a new Appalachian Holmes Center record in the 300 meter dash and moved into second on ASU's all-time list in the event. Teammates Mark Sturgis and Ricky Harris were impressive as well, taking home second and third overall, moving them into seventh and ninth on Appalachian's all-time list.
In the 55m dash, Sturgis and Harris finished first and second with times of 6.49 and 6.52, while DeSean Pearce came in fourth, finishing the race in 6.55 and in the 55m hurdles, Phillip Bush and Matt Boruff paced Appalachian, placing second and third overall.
Pearce had a strong showing in the 200m dash as well, coming in first with a time of 22.59, while fellow freshman AJ Dohanic came in fourth.
Nick O'Keefe also posted a record-breaking day for the Black and Gold, as he broke the ASU Holmes Center in the 800m run, by .03, running the race in 1:55.84 and finishing first. Teammate Nash Dunn came in second in the event.
Sean Thompson was the lone Mountaineer in the 500m run, grabbing first place in 1:09.02.
Carlos Carter kept with the Apps first place winnings, notching first in the 400m dash with a time of 50.69, while Ryan Harris came in second in the mile run, running the race in 4:31. 99.
Darius Purcell continued with his strong performance in the high jump, leaping 6-8 for first place, with Matt Pfingst placing second, jumping 6-6 and Matt Boruff finishing third with a 6-4 jump.
In the pole vault, Boruff recorded a personal best vault of 15-1, to finish second in the event, with Zach Smith, Landon Patterson, Jack Bell, Jake Goodchild and Matt Pfingst notching the 4-8th spots.
Mason Campbell led the way for ASU in the 3000m run, finishing first with a time of 9:09.29.
Capping off Thursday's action, the Appalachian 4x400m relay team, also grabbed a first place finish.
ASU returns to action Friday and Saturday February 13 and 14 as the Apps head to Clemson to compete at the Clemson Invitational.
