BOWLING GREEN, OHIO- Appalachian State University women's basketball was able to pull within nine points off a made
Anna Freeman trey at the 2:33 mark in the first half, but an 11-0 run to close out the period put the contest out of reach for the Mountaineers falling 89-68 to five time defending MAC champions, Bowling Green Wednesday evening in the Falcon's Anderson Arena. With the loss, ASU falls to 4-6 on the season and is on a two-game losing streak, while BGSU remains undefeated on their home floor and improves to 9-4 overall.
The contest appeared to get out of hand when the Falcons took a commanding 19 point lead, draining six three pointers in the opening minutes of action. ASU however would not back down, as
Ashlen Dewart scored six straight points to chip away at the Falcons advantage.
Junior
Sam Ramirez scored her first points of the night drilling a trey, while
Anna Freeman got on the board as well, nailing two-straight threes to cut the Falcons lead to just nine points with a little over two minutes to play in the half.
Freeman finished the night with her second double-double of her season, and recorded a school-record eight blocks, leading the Apps to tie the single game team block record of 11 set against ETSU this season.
Unfortunately, the rally was not enough to change the momentum as an 11-0 Falcon streak to close out the half, pushed BGSU's lead to 20 points heading into intermission.
Dewart got the Mountaineers going in the second half tallying the first six points after the break, but stout three-point shooting by the Falcons proved to be deadly. Bowling Green went 14-28 from behind the arc, an impressive 50 percent and set an ASU school record in opponent three-pointers made.
ASU could not come any closer than 20 points in the second-half, despite a valiant effort by Dewart, as she scored a career-high 34 points and hauled in seven rebounds to go along with two blocks.
The Black and Gold now take a seven-day break for the Holidays and resume action Wednesday December 30, welcoming George Mason to the Holmes Center, with the tip off scheduled for 7 pm.
