BOONE, N.C. - College of Charleston scored a goal with less than a minute to go in each half to pick up a 2-1 win over Appalachian State University women's soccer Sunday afternoon at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
With the win, Charleston improves to 11-5-1 overall and holds on to first place with a 7-1 SoCon record. ASU drops to 5-8-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the SoCon.
The Mountaineers came out firing, taking the first five shots of the match. After a Charleston foul,
Lindsay Jaffe tapped a pass to
Katy Dodd whose shot was stopped by Katie Tate but
Sydney Hill was able to knock the rebound off the right post and in to give ASU the 1-0 lead.
With 44 seconds remaining in the first half, ASU committed a foul in the box and the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick. Julie Romanik's kick was stopped by a diving
Caroline Clarke, but Romanik was able to get the rebound and slide it in the left side of the goal to tie the score just before halftime.
In the 57th minute Hill sent a cross pass from the right that
Meggie Graham got a head on but went just wide right.
In the 79th minute Annie Pease sent a header to the top left corner of the goal off a corner kick, but
Jaffe was able to knock it away to preserve the tie.
With just 17 seconds to go in the match, Pease headed in a corner kick by Hannah Gmerek for the game-winner.
Appalachian outshot CofC 8-7 in the first half but the Cougars finished with a 20-14 advantage and a 7-1 lead in corners.
Clarke finished with eight saves while Tate had seven for the Cougars.
