Second-Half Rally Comes Up Short in 74-68 Loss to Wofford

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's basketball clawed back from a 16-point second-half deficit to take a one-point lead with just over five minutes to go, but Wofford scored 13 of the game's final 19 points to deal ASU a 74-68 setback on Thursday evening at the Holmes Center.

For the second time this season, Donald Sims led the Appalachian charge against the Terriers, scoring 19 points with five three-pointers and two rebounds. In the first meeting this season, the sophomore scored 18 points.

Donterious Hughes made 6-of-10 shots for 13 points to set a new career high, with a steal and two assists. Tyler Webb reached two career marks in the contest, with 11 points and three three-pointers.

The Apps (7-11, 4-6 SoCon) opened the game with a swift 10-2 run as Donald Sims drained a three-pointer and Donterious Hughes connected on a pair of layups.

Wofford then rallied to tie and closed out the half on a combined 34-18 run to secure a 36-28 halftime advantage.

Hughes scored nine points in the opening frame to lead the Apps, and finished the game with a career-high 13 points. He also pitched in four rebounds and a pair of assists.

The Terriers (9-9, 5-4) increased their lead to 16 points four minutes into the second half before the Apps surged back to tie the game at 56-56 with an 11-0 run sparked by six forced turnovers, two Sims three-pointers and two Hughes layups off of steals.

After a series of ties, the Mountaineers gained their first advantage of the second half at 62-61 with a Josh Hunter putback with 5:30 remaining in the half.

From there, Wofford's Junior Salters scored the nine of his team's final 13 points as the Terriers fended off the Apps for the 74-68 win. ASU's final six points came from Sims treys.

Salters finished the game with 21 points while Noah Dahlman led all scorers with 23 points for the visitors.

Hunter was the leading rebounder with 11, as ASU held a 38-33 advantage on the boards, including 16 on the offensive end, compared to just eight for Wofford.

Sims' 19 points were the most for the guard since he scored 20 at Niagara on November 22, and it was the fifth-straight double-figure performance for the Gaffney, S.C. native.

The Apps return to the hardwood on Saturday to host Furman on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
