Volleyball Hosts Winston-Salem State In Home Opener

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University volleyball squares off against Winston-Salem State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Holmes Center in the first of 13 home matches this season.

The Mountaineers (0-6) faced a loaded tournament field over the weekend and were unable to pick up the first win of the season at MTSU's Blue Raider Bash. A sweep by Iowa State was sandwiched by four-set losses to Florida International and Loyola Marymount, but ASU looks to recapture its winning way from last season beginning on Tuesday.

ASU is 55-26 in seven seasons at the Holmes Center, including an 8-2 mark in 2007. The Apps have never faces WSSU, who also enters the match looking for its first win of the year. Senior Carla Durham leads the offense with 2.5 kills and 0.82 blocks per set while Cassie Engelgau paces the defense with 3.95 digs per set.

The Rams opened the season at Virginia Tech's Hokie Invitational with three-set losses to Coastal Carolina, host Virginia Tech and Maryland-Eastern Shore. This past weekend, WSSU fell by the same scores to Navy, Charleston Southern and host Gardner-Webb at the Runnin' Bulldogs Classic.

Ashley Harris paces the offense with 17 kills on the season.

Following Tuesday's match, the Mountaineers return to the road for the Jefferson Cup at Virginia this weekend. Friday's match pits ASU against Binghamton at 4 p.m.
