ASU Beats Monmouth 4-3

Davidson, N.C. - Appalachian State field hockey got three second half goals to earn its first victory of the season with a 4-3 win over Monmouth Saturday afternoon.

Appalachian faced a 2-1 halftime deficit but starting in the 54th minute got three goals in the span of four minutes to take a commanding 4-2 lead.  Monmouth had a goal two minutes later in the 60th minute for the final 4-3 margin.

The Mountaineers held a 19-14 advantage in shots, 12 coming in the second half.  Jessie Harris led the team with four shots, one of which proved to be the game winning goal.

Caitlin Counts started the scoring for the Mountaineers in the 6th minute, scoring off a penalty corner from Amanda Young.  Before the end of the first half Monmouth got goals from AIleen Bosemans and Katie Amundsen to give the Hawks a 2-1 halftime advantage.

Seventeen minutes into the second stanza the Apps started lighting of the scoreboard with a goal from Jeanette Miers.  In the 54th minute Amanda Young gave the Apps a 3-2 lead with another goal.  Nicole Morgan was credited with assists on both goals.  Four minutes later Jessie Harris put ASU ahead for good with a goal off Counts pass.  Enza Mazza tacked on a goal in the 60th minute for Monmouth.

Denise Adams had five saves in goal for the Mountaineers.

ASU returns home October 1 to host Davidson at 7:45pm.
