ASU Comes Up Short Against Rider University

West Chester, Pa. - Appalachian State University field hockey fell 3-2 against Rider University during the second round of the 3rd Annual Vonnie Gros Field Hockey Classic Sunday afternoon.

The Mountaineers came out strong and outshot the Broncs 6-4 in the first half. But, Rider was able to get on the board first, as Diana Celebre scored the first goal of the game with a tap in inside the circle. ASU's Amanda Young answered back with a goal from a rebound off of her own shot after a penalty corner, tying the game 1-1. Diana Celebre rounded out the scoring in the first half with her second goal of the game.

The Broncs took the lead 2-1 going into the half.

Tricia Crotty from Rider scored the first goal in the second half, making it 3-1. ASU's Ashley Patterson responded, scoring off a penalty stroke with nine minutes to go in the game, but it was not enough for the win.

Sabra Holt was in goal for ASU and finished the game with five saves, four of them in the second half.

The Mountaineers host their first home game September 17 against Stanford at 7:45 p.m. The game will be held at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
