West Chester, Pa. - Appalachian State field hockey dropped a close match to West Chester Saturday, as the Mountaineers lost 3-2 in the first game of the 3rd annual Vonnie Gros Field Hockey Classic. With the loss, Appalachian falls to 0-5 on the season, while the Golden Rams improve to 3-1.
WCU came out strong with a goal in the ninth minute by Brittany Cislak. Although the Golden Rams were up 1-0, the Apps outshot them 10-7 in the first half. Nicole Morgan scored tying the game 1-1 with an assist from Jenn Heiss, finishing the scoring in the first 35 minutes of play.
Alex Swayze scored for the Golden Rams during the first minute in the second half. Brittany Cislak scored her second goal of the game for West Chester. ASU's Katie Price rounded out the scoring with a goal off a penalty corner with an assist from Nicole Morgan.
The Mountaineers had more offensive opportunities throughout the game as they had seven penalty corners compared to West Chester's two, but were unable to convert them into goals.
ASU goalkeeper Sabra Holt started in goal and finished the day with nine saves.
The Mountaineers return to action September 14 during the second round of the 3rd Annual Vonnie Gros Field Hockey Classic against Rider University at Noon in West Chester, Pa.
