Mountaineers Draw Even with Campbell 1-1

BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian women's soccer began the 2008 season facing a challenging opponent in Campbell. The Mountaineers were unable to keep the lead they established in the second half, and ended up tying the Camels 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation and two ten minute overtime periods. With the tie, ASU moves to 0-0-1 on the season, while Campbell moves to 0-1-2.

The Apps started off the match strong, as senior Casey Cleary had a near miss on goal, as her shot from the inside of the 18 yard box hit the top of the cross bar just seven mintues into play. The rest of the half was evenly matched, as Campbell recorded two shots, while Appalachian launched just one. Both teams headed into the break remaining scoreless.

ASU dominated the second half, as junior Jennifer MacNeill found the back of the net, scoring just eight minutes into play, off a cross from Stephanie Balzano.

The Mountaineers held onto their lead until the 85th minute of play, when Hanna Salmen broke through the Appalachian defense, scoring off a pass from teammate Olga Ekblom, tying the match at one apiece.

Despite three shots in the overtime periods by the Camels and one shot by the Apps, neither team was able to score, ending the match in a 1-1 tie.

Defensively, Caroline Clarke played all 110 minutes for ASU, recording five saves, while Boomie Luck was in goal for the Camels, recording four saves.

All told, both Campbell and Appalachian had nine shots on the afternoon, with CU launching six on goal and ASU five. Appalachian had seven corner kicks compared to Campbell's one, and the Mountaineers had a total of 11 fouls, while Campbell had 15.

Appalachian returns to action Friday September 5, as the Apps travel to Cookeville, Tenn. to take on Tennessee Tech at 4 p.m.
