Moon Township, Pa. - Appalachian State University field hockey lost its first match of the season 3-4 in a shootout against Robert Morris University.
The Mountaineers started out strong with a quick goal by Christine Zanowicz, just 39 seconds into the game. The Colonials answered back just as the time ran out in the first half, with a goal by Julie Gabriel, assisted by Julian Howley.
The Colonials took the lead early in the second half at the 1:39 mark with a goal from Sam Lawless. The Apps forward, Amanda Young, tied the score 2-2 with a goal at the 52:56 mark. Two minutes later, Jessica Charles scored for Robert Morris, giving the Colonials the lead 3-2. Jeanette Miers tied the game once more with 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
Tied at the end of regulation, the teams were faced with two sudden death overtimes. The Mountaineers defense held the Colonials to zero shots on goal during each period.
At the conclusion of the second overtime, the match ended with a shootout, five players from each team to shoot a penalty. ASU's forward Jessie Harris scored for the Mountaineers but it was not enough to pull out the win. Robert Morris conquered the shootout with a record of 3-1, giving them the win 4-3.
The Mountaineers next match is August 31 against Missouri State in Moon Township, Pa.
